Simple Interest is earned only on the initial principal
amount. Compound Interest, which this calculator uses, is
earned on the principal plus all previously accumulated interest.
Compounding is what causes exponential growth over time.
Compounding frequency (m) is how often interest is calculated and added back to the
principal in a year (e.g., Monthly = 12, Daily = 365). The higher the
frequency, the faster the interest begins earning interest on itself,
resulting in a higher final Future Value (FV).
Yes. By default, the annuity calculation is for an Ordinary Annuity
(deposits at the end of the period). If you select the checkbox for Annuity
Due in the Annuity tab, the calculator automatically adjusts the final FV
to account for the extra period of compounding interest, which results in a slightly
higher future balance.
